A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life. -- CHARLES DARWIN
If you’re interested in discussing whether my skills match your specific needs contact me. I am happy to provide a targeted resume. My intent as a career freelancer is to serve every client and handle every project with a perfectionist's eye. With that in mind, I am willing to study subject-matter beyond billable hours, word-counts or pages.
PHILOSOPHY IN ACTION
I took the photo that banners this website on the Oregon Coast. It is a metaphor for what I do -- my work is a wild adventure. No matter how much I learn, I am still overwhelmed by all that there is left to learn, for myself as a publishing professional and for the science-community in general. In the sense that knowledge and discovery are limitless, each of us is what the banner-photo represents: A child staring at a massive and uncontrollable ocean, overwhelmed but full of curiousity. I seek out work that puts me in that metaphorical place, and helps me to continue the goal that led me to my career choice. That goal is to follow the journalist's mantra and "comfort the afflicted."
That said, I am keenly interested in disease cures and therapeutic vaccines. One mental resting place for that interest has been the Michael J. Fox Foundation, for its focus on a cure for Parkinson's disease and its commitment to fund only organizations with the same cure-focus. I learned of that organization by reading "Always Looking Up" by Michael J. Fox, while on a plane ride to Southern California. After completing the book, I immediately signed up for the MJFF newsletter. Further momentum was provided by the Newsweek article "Desperately Seeking Cures," which delved into the questions of why some very promising discoveries for potential disease-cures idle in the discovery stage, never advancing to the level of human use.
I intend to someday commit to work that assists in cure-seeking. It is my hope that I can offer my skills as a writer and editor to find the barriers to those scientific advances, and then patiently explain the details. That may mean working for an organization focused on cures, or taking on freelance projects that help to find holes in policy or paths to funding. It may mean finding ways to educate the public about why funding is essential in the baby-step goals toward scientific advancements. Whatever the role, I hope to be a catalyst for the cures needed to alleviate suffering, which chips away at each affected person's happiness and sense of power.
